Speakers Profiles

Professor Gerard HastingsProfessor Gerard Hastings is Professor of Social Marketing at Stirling, Director of the Institute for Social Marketing and the Cancer Research UK Centre for Tobacco Control Research. Gerard's academic career began in 1980 at the University of Strathclyde where he gained aPhD in Social Marketing and founded and directed the Centre for Social Marketing. In recent years Gerard has acted as a Temporary Advisor to the World Health Organisation on tobacco and alcohol marketing as well as blinding trachoma, and a Special Advisor to the House of Commons Health Select Committee during their enquiries into the tobacco and food industries. He provides regular guidance on social and critical marketing to the Scottish, UK and European Parliaments.

Justin BangsJustin Bangs is an Associate at The Cadmus Group, Inc., a U.S.-based environmental consultancy. Mr. Bangs leads Gov 2.0 and new media outreach efforts for the Environmental Health Solutions Practice group at Cadmus. Justin was involved in the first YouTube video contest ever held by the US federal Government, as part of the radonleaders.org campaign, which focuses on radon as the leading cause of lung cancer in non smokers, and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the general population. In 2006 Justin received the highly acclaimed Gates Cambridge Scholarship and obtained a MPhil Social Environmental Development from St Catharine's College.

John DrummondJohn Drummond is Chairman and Chief Executive of Corporate Culture. Over the last eight years he has worked on social marketing, CSR strategy, branding and organisational change with many clients including Bank of America, BT, Sky, WRAP, Marks & Spencer, T-Mobile, O2, Buying Solutions and EDF Energy. John is currently creating a new national curriculum in social marketing. He has an expertise in behaviour change, social change, branding and market-led CSR. John began life as a journalist before working for IBM in sales and marketing for seven years. He was formerly Group Communications Director of United Utilities.

Julia SnowJulia Snow leads on the Work House Social Marketing activities. Her background combines marketing, communications and grassroots level regeneration and economic development projects. Since attending the International Social Marketing Conference in Brighton last year she is 'on a mission' to bring social marketing to the East of England and to highlight the huge potential of the concept in the wider public and third sector field.

Patrick Ladbury is the Communications Programme Manager at the National Social Marketing Centre. Formally launched in December 2006, it's the centre's mission, alongside strategic partners in the National Consumer Council and the Department of Health, to build capacity and skills in social marketing at strategic and operational levels. We work with people to find ways to address behavioral challenges and assist them to improve the effectiveness of behavioral interventions.

Liz Wakefield, DipM, MCIMLiz Wakefield, DipM, MCIM is a strategic marketer with 17 years marketing management experience spanning the public and private sectors. Currently MD of specialist social marketing agency hey moscow, Liz has spent the past eight years providing marketing planning and consultancy services, from research to implementation, to social marketing projects in the public and third sectors.

Workshop Facilitators

Dr Haya Al-DayaniDr Haya Al-Dayani is lecturer at the UEA's Business School for Entrepreneurship. Her research focus is encompassed in women's empowerment and entrepreneurship with a specific concentration on women's entrepreneurship in the Middle East. Her interest in social marketing developed from her work with women-led non-profit organisations operating in Jordan.

Jenny EatonJenny Eaton leads on Work House training design and delivery, her expertise includes business start-up and back to work programmes and enterprise events- specializing on hard to reach clients. Jenny is a SFEDI accreditation business adviser for social enterprises. She is passionate about innovating and delivering learning programmes that help clients progress their lives.

David ElversonDavid Elverson, Commercial Director for Spirals, leads on consultancy projects specialising in marketing, the commercialisation of the public sector, research and Local Strategic Partnerships. Prior to joining Spirals David ran a marketing consultancy firm that worked with many public sector organisations and before that was a senior manager with a large county council.

Dr Louise HumphriesDr Louise Humphries leads the Work House social research team. Her extensive work experience spans the range from micro-enterprises in East Africa through to SMEs and multinationals in the UK right through to the Cranfield School of Management. Louise has a particular expertise in innovative approaches to research and marketing, and is a founder member of the New Marketing Research Group at Cranfield.

David MartinDavid Martin worked at Board level in manufacturing for 18 years before joining Business Link. He was appointed Partnership Director for Norfolk in 2007 and now contributes to Shaping Norfolk's Future both as a member of the management board and as an active participant in a number of sector and thematic groups.


Simon PomfretSimon Pomfret has been the managing director of Spirals for five years. Prior to this he was a senior manager for fifteen years with a large county council. He has been responsible for large, complex and politically sensitive projects both as a manager and a consultant. Simon specialises in diagnostic consultancy and transforming underperforming services as well as bringing about and responding to the government's modernisation agenda.

Dr Sam Revill is the Regional Manager for the National Social Marketing Centre supporting the development of health-related social marketing in the region. Sam has spent 20 years working in the public sector in HM armed forces, nursing, teaching, primary care trusts and local government. She achieved a Doctorate in dietary behaviour change interventions at the Medical School of the University of Newcastle after obtaining a BSc and spending some time in the private sector as a food analyst and new product development technologist.

Chris StarkieChris Starkie joined Shaping Norfolk's Future in May 2008, after five years as Business Editor of the Eastern Daily Press, the country's best selling regional morning newspaper. While at the EDP Chris was named Business Journalist of the Year for the East of England three years running.
